New challenges: Search and rescue operations (SAR) in the mediterranean

December 2014

OOC deployed two of its OSVs, OOC COUGAR and OOC JAGUAR, to the Mediterranean. Both operate out of Malta and supply support services to offshore oil rigs.

From the very start of their charters, the vessels have been involved in a high number of search and rescue (SAR) operations, and in three months conducted over twelve SAR missions in which they recovered almost 1,500 persons. In accordance to the unwritten mariners code of conduct, to always assist others in peril at sea, merchant shipping companies willingly support every request for aid, but it is not decent conduct to pass all SAR duties onto them (us). In view of the upcoming summer months and the expected increase of the number of refugee vessels OOC supports the approach of the German Shipowning Association to the German Government and the Europe Union to demand a greater commitment of all member states of the EU in order to stabilize the highly critical situation.
